Most of Follet's books deal with international intrigue. The best of this lot is usually listed as Eye of the Needle. However, the most popular is The Pillars of the Earth. Follet is so prolific, it is hard to choose just one.

Start with "World Without End" and then read "Pillars of the Earth," which is the sequel. "The Eye of the Needle," "The Man From St. Petersburg," "Lie Down With Lions," etc. Follett is a good storyteller. You really can't go wrong.
