What's involved in a vinyl tile to hardwood transition?

Can I do it myself?

The hard part of this job will be to take off the vinyl tile. It is probably glued down. Use hot water and dish soap to remove the glue. We tried everything and this work best. Lay a sub floor over that so the tile is level. The rest easy.

You can find transition floor thresholds at any home improvement store. All you need is a drill to screw the piece into the subflooring. Its a very simple install and should take you less then one hour.

The vinyl should be removed unless it is down tight and you can't get it up. Putting hardwood down is not to hard except for knowing how to deal with all the difficult areas. If you have a lot of small areas, cut outs, etc. Consider a professional.

Make sure your floor is completely level. Repair or level out any chipped or broken vinyl tiles. Lay a sub-floor if necessary. Hardwood that is pre-cut to snap together is easy for someone with moderate skills to piece together and cut to fit. Make sure you purchase the underlayment and measure twice, cut once to avoid waste. Get a helper.

Yeah it can be done by yourself. Just take the vinyl sticker off and attach hardwood. It's really easy. Truly a do it yourself project.

You can do anything yourself. It is rather time consuming and that is why there are some jobs that are the reason people are paid to do them. You're talking pulling up your existing floor, laying a subfloor then laying the hardwood and coating it. Your best bet is to hire a professional.

You would need to get all of the vinyl tile up and clean the floor real good. Then start laying your hardwood floors.

A lot of this will depend on what tools you already own, and what the condition of your sub-floor is. Assuming that your sub-floor is sound, removal of the vinyl is a physically intensive project but doable. Installing the hardwood will entail using power tools, removal of your molding, careful measurement, and many other basic carpentry skills.
