A septic tank is a fairly simple system containing several baffles which separate solids from effluent and a whole community of microorganisms making a living off of your unused groceries.

A septic tank will contain an inlet, an outlet, and a baffle system. The waste material enters the tank at the inlet. It then flows into the baffle system which helps the waste separate from the liquid. The liquid then exits the tank to flow into the leach field lines.
