A really simple experiment is to learn how combustion works, and discover what's air made of. Take a candle, light it up and cover it with a glass jar. What happens then? The flame will extinguish, of course, due to the lack of oxygen. A very small introduction to chemistry!

I think a good first grade science experiment is to plant a small window ledge garden. Something simple would be best such as a bean plant where the seeds are large enough for the kids to handle and they germinate easily.

Playing with magnets and learning about positive and negative forces. Have them attach two magnified objects together, trying to keep them apart for as long as possible, to feel the attraction. Discus the North and South Poles.
