To explore the harness of different minerals using Moh's hardness scale. This can be done by scratching various minerals with different, common metals (copper coin, steel paperclip). Softer minerals such as talc will scratch with even your fingernail where as only hardened steel will scratch something like quartz (of glass).

A fun experiment for a boy is to test how quickly different fabrics and materials burn! Get a variety of fabrics, cut them all to the same size, and use a stopwatch to determine the burn rate for each. Be sure to have a fire extinguisher handy, just in case!
