The device that Galileo invented did not have a numerical temperature scale, so it is more properly called a thermoscope. Galileo made his first rudimentary thermoscope most likely in 1593, consisting of a long slender tube that sucked up water to a level depending on the temperature of the water.

Galileo Galilei invented an early thermometer in 1593. However, his water thermoscope did not have a standardized scale (as modern ones do).
