It's really not recommended before 6 weeks. A few days in, pulling out the jewelery would pull on the delicate web of new skin being formed inside the channel and cause it to rip and tear. Also there's a good chance the new jewelry wouldn't go in. Piercings tend to close up quite quickly, even after healing.

Piercing retainer is initially inserted inside the hole. Nothing to fear even if it is not removed within a specific period but as soon as the hole is healed try to replace with some other metatlic ornament because the initial retainer will be temporarily put and will not be so strong. If it is not healed, apply some antibiotic ointment.
