Some very early inventions included levers, invented by Archimedes of Greece in roughly 270 BCE. The astrolabe and the early catapult were inventions of ancient Greece as well. The ancient Chinese were also quite innovative--they created the first compasses for navigation, and were the first to invent gunpowder (probably around 1000 CE). And of course, ancient Egyptians invented papyrus (paper).

Some of the earliest tools were made of stone and wood created from a process called flintknapping. Arrowheads, stone axes and blades for scraping furs are among the oldest artifacts now known to be man made, sometimes only identifiable by a few flakes of stone.
