What was life like in 19th Century England?

It was crowded and dirty. Industrialization was in full swing and coal was the primary fuel. People migrated to cities looking for jobs. Read Dickens and you'll get an idea.

It depended on who you were, if you were a woman then as John Stuart Mill points out you were essentially treated like property for sale. If you were poor then life was filled with illness and poverty, however if you were reasonably rich life was good but a little prudish.
