"The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a real classic. Also look at J. d. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye", because it is very highly regarded and a favorite among young people. British author William Golding's "The Lord of the Flies" is really great, as is Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood".
