A caterpillar who has been out in the sun too long. The red caterpillar is common to the oleander tree and is called an oleander caterpillar.

The stinging rose caterpillar is red and yes they do sting. They are found mostly in wooded areas and you can be stung just by rubbing up against the leafs.

Red caterpillars are moth caterpillars such as the Misogada or Heterocampas species. Readiness to pupate or parasitism both cause these drastic, but quite beautiful, color changes to occur. Very unique moth caterpillars indeed.
