Architects use several tools such as compass etc. Usually they would need to be trained in auto cad to go forward. Tools are not as important as per say electronic tools. The right program matters.

The most common tools an architect uses are surveying equipment and a computer. Surveying equipment takes accurate positioning information of the site as it is. The computer is used with computer aided drafting software to design what will be built.

It depends on what kind of work the architect is doing. There are a number of software programs, including CAD, maybe Borland Together Control Center, Dreamweaver, and a host of others.
