Columbia can be a very dangerous place. Make sure family and friends know where you are going, contact the US (or you're own nation's) embassy once you arrive and let them know where you are staying and for how long. Don't get involved in illegal activities and you will enjoy.

Make sure you do your homework beforehand. Check out movies and books about Colombia to get a sense of its flavor, and start brushing up on your Spanish. It will be much easier to get around Colombia and set up your life there if you have a good command of Spanish.

As is the case with any impoverished country, there is a lot of crime. Innocent ignorance makes foreign travelers attractive targets. Mind yourself and your possessions. Keep a close on the surroundings and travel safe at all times. Don't go off exploring on your own. Learn the lay of the land, first thing.

Learn the lanuage. You will get so much more out of the experience if you do. Go there with an open mind and be a good observer.
