The causes of the Cold War were complex. But, to oversimplify, the conflict began at the end of World War II, when the Soviet Union attempted to establish control over the territory in Eastern Europe it had occupied in its counterassault into Nazi Germany. The USSR established puppet regimes in these nations, and the Western powers responded in kind.

The Cold War started when the USSR, the Russian Soviet Empire, tested their first nuclear bomb several years after World War 2. This raised the threat level, because two mortal enemies could now wipe out each other and the rest of the world.
