Palmito Ranch is widely considered the final major battle of the Civil War, fought on May 12 and 13, 1865 (Lee surrendered to Grant on April 9). Colonel Theodore Barrett's four hundred Union troops, (including 250 soldiers from the 62nd Colored Division) clashed with Confederate Colonel John "Rip" Ford, commanding a larger force. Confederate artillery eventually necessitated a Federal retreat.
