5 1/2'' x 7 1/2'' rear quarter (2 door), w/ audiophile sound, 1999/2001 ; Ford Series. 5 1/2" x 7 1/2" front doors. With or without premium sound. Straight from the ford parts catalouge. According to crutchfield, your vehicle without the premium or mach factory system has 5.25" speakers in the front.

If you need to find out the speaker size a Ford Explorer takes you could call ford service up and ask them or you could go to a radio sales shop and ask them if you go there you can probably have them install the speakers when you buy them for your son.
