You should look for a stain thats going to be durable first. Second something thats going to look nice either in comparison to the house or the landscape behind it. I would would suggest going to a hardware store to get it such as a Lowes or Home Depot they will have a lot larger of a selection.

Most importantly make sure the stain is made for exterior use. The stains also come in different grades, some will last longer than others.

Look for a better quality stain at hardware or paint stores. It needs to be water resistant for best and longer results. It comes in a variety of shades.

Always buy a high quality product when buying stain for exterior surfaces. The stains color will stay true longer with a good brand stain. When choosing the color, make sure to look at samples stained on the same wood you will be staining. If an adequate sample is not available, buy just a small quantity of the stain to test.
