At 39 weeks the pregnancy cycle is over, some women go above 39 weeks or below. But if you are having contractions at this time then you are ready.

These are most likely Braxton Hicks contractions and false labor. In late pregnancy your body will start practicing contractions. Some people feel the contraction and some people don't. I was lucky and did not feel any - although I was having contractions during non-stress tests. Until the contracts are at regular intervals and close together they aren't labor.

Your body is preparing for labor, you should be prepared to go to the hospital when the time comes, drink plenty of water and get as much rest as you can. If the contractions become more regular you should contact your doctor and or hospital for direction from them. Make sure you take care of your self.

You're about ready to have your baby anytime now. I would call your doctors office and speak to him about these contractions. He may want you to come in so he can see how far dilated you are.

These could simply be false labor, but you need to go see your OBGYN to be checked out in case the baby is in distress.
