What should I know before buying a guitar for a nine-year-old?

When purchasing a guitar for a younger child, take the child's size into account, the child's interest in playing guitar, and whether electric or accoustic would be more suitable.

A 9 year old may lose interest fast so don't spend a lot of money on them. At most music stores you can buy a kit for beginners for a decent price. This kit contains an electric guitar, a practice amp, a beginner lesson book, a tuner, etc.

My son and daughter both started playing at age 8. Buy a Martin Sigma or Alvarez (300. 00 range) and let them get used to the full sized neck immediately. Do not buy something cheap from Wal-Mart, as the strings are too high off the neck, making it very hard to play.

First, don't plan to spend a lot, since the child may give up shortly. You can find a great guitar for less than $250. Try a Takamine G-series, which will last for years without feeling old or outdated. Do not buy First Act, buy from a guitar store.

Kids tend to change their interest (a lot)... I would not recommend buying the best since there are chances they might quit. First see how interested they are with playing a guitar. I would try to borrow one first and see how long they play with it. When you think you child should have one, get them a decent one... but... not... overprice.

Don't buy a full-size guitar because a nine-year old's hands will have travel with some chord patterns. Buy a half or three-quarter size guitar. Also, have someone who knows guitars check that the action is fairly low. And a nice tone will make practice more pleasant.

Kids often lose interest once they find out it takes hard work to learn an instrument. Rent one from a music store until you know the child is progressing.
