If your child is in kindergarten, he or she is still developing fine motor skills. Have your child tear paper, play with putty or string beads to help develop these skills. This will lead to more control over the pencil and the ability to hold it correctly.

Holding a pencil correctly takes practice and the muscles involved need time to develop so little hands don't get tired when asked to write and draw during the school day.
