There are a number of things to consider when designing an island in a kitchen. Height is an important aspect. You need to think about what your purpose of the island will be. For example, you will want a different height for a breakfast bar vs. a cooking prep area. This will also impact your lighting choices.

You want the island to be about as high as the counters. Sometimes people make them a few inches higher but not more than that or it will look weird. You will want to have good lighting over it. You can do track lighting or more modern, sleek pendant lights.

The usual height for island lighting is between 30" to 40" above the surface of island, just be sure to give yourself enough space to not bump them.

When determining how low to hang lighting above an island counter in a kitchen, think about how tall the main people in the household are. The lower the lighting, the higher ther chances of someone bumping their head. Lower lighting often adds a better visual appeal to the kitchen, however.

My recommendation would be to hang one pendant light for every two feet of counter space on the island. For a four foot island, 2 pendant lights would give ample lighting and balance to the room. Your pendant light should be hung about two feet above the counter top (meaning the bottom of the light. )

First of all there is the choice of recessed or pendant lighting. Lighting should be equally divided over the island or directly centered. Pendant lights should not hang too low.
