First thing is to identify and differentiate the live wire from the neutral wire with the help of a hand tester

First, make sure the connection box you use to hold the fan to the ceiling is the proper type and can handle the weight. That is the biggest mistake I have seen. Then, just connect, the hot, common, and ground wires with an appropriately sized wire nut and you are good to go.

In typical residential wiring you will come across 3 wires when hanging a ceiling fan. If wired correctly the black wire is hot, the white wire is not hot, and the copper wire is the common or ground. In some cases the ground is hooked to both the white and copper wire. Check them before installation.

Generally you want to run a 14-3 wire to the fan. One of the hots is for the light and the other is for the fan.
