Follow the directions that come with the fan. The most important thing is to make sure the electric is off. If you are not sure please hire an electrician.

Make sure the fan is secure and will not wobble or fall when in use. Make sure the blades will not scrape against the wall. It is important to make sure to install the fan following all of the manufacturer's instructions. Shortcuts can lead to disaster. Make sure the fan is not too heavy and is supported correctly.

First decide if you want a ceiling hugging fan or one that hangs lower. If you want the one that hangs lower make sure it is high enough so you and friends have clearance. This is usually centered in the middle of the room. I wouldn't put it over a table that you eat at even if it has lights.
