What should I know about a deep barking cough in my nine year old son?

Croup or acute laryngo-tracheo-bronchitis is a very common infection affecting children of school going age causing a deep barking cough. Viral etiology is implicated and treatment will mostly be supportive in the form of steam inhalation,anti-tussives[cough suppressants],anti-histaminics and decongestants. Close watch should be kept for development of dyspnoea which could herald onset of pneumonia and will warrant institution of anti-biotic therapy.

Those are never good. Take him to your doctor and get him on Antibiotics right away. It could be bronchitis or another more severe issue.

Could be Asthma or croupe. He should see his Dr. Make sure you let the DR. know what makes it better or worse if anything.

It is completely normal. It could mean that he has a little bit of fluid in his lungs by not blowing his nose enough
