Try disconnecting it, blow out connections. You may need to clean connections, we find that rubbing alcohol on a cotton tip (q tip) works well for this. Then make certain it is put together correctly and you have a good connection. We've found usually any issues are result of either poor connection or faulty controller.

Assuming that the controller is no longer under warranty, you should disassemble the controller and clean the contacts and/or optics.

When a PS2 controller's joysticks stop responding it's likely due to dust on the potentiometer's contact, applying air pressure on it might solve the problem, or the axle is broken.

I recently purchased a Used PS2 and the controller was great, but well worn and while it works I wanted to have one that worked like the one that came out of the box so the easiest fix for the controller is to just purchase a new one as they are not that expensive to replace.

The buttons may have accumulated dust, on the inside of the controller, which is preventing a good contact with the controller board. Take the controller apart and clean the contacts.

If the rest of the controller is working, it's either a dirty or damaged contact. You can try blowing away any dirt between the contacts or cleaning the contacts with isopropyl alcohol. If that doesn't work, you can try disassembling the controller and cleaning where the buttons make contact with the circuitry. If both methods fail, buy a new one.

Try another controller, if it works then your old controller has to be repaired but if it doesnt, the port on you PS2 is dead.

First of a good cleaning is in order. Remove all accumulated dust and dirt or grime that may be there. If cord is twisted badly you will have to replace it original replacement. Don't buy any of those cheap replacements. Check all the plug in inserts to make sure they are clean. Hope this is of help to you.

So try on another PS2, if they do not want to see is the cord. If the cable is completely in line take a screwdriver and opened it. It is possible that there is dust or not well-connected wires.
