If they are the same sex this can cause problems. The old gerbil may be territorial after having the whole place to himself. My advice would be to buy a bigger cage so they can have their own space. If that doesn't work keep them separate them before one dies.
Buy a larger cage, or add a third gerbil. Dominance fighting is not usually life threatening, but can be so watch closely in case you need to seperate them permanently.
