What should I do about bed bugs in a rental in California?

Shouldn't the landlord pay for extermination?

He certainly should, but if he won't, there's a fairly inexpensive product you can apply yourself. Sold as 'bedbug powder,' it's diatomaceous earth, a substance deadly to insects but so safe for humans it's often used as a food additive. It works mechanically, so they can't become immune to it.

If you have a rental in California, and there are bed bugs, merely look up California Civil Code 1941. 1 and review the uninhabitable section. While a lawyer may be costly, perhaps your newly found knowledge of legal code will be sufficient for your landlord to do the right thing.

If it is clear that the bedbugs were in the apartment before you moved in, then they are the responsibility of the landlord, but not if you brought them in.

You should look in your rental contract to see if your landlord is obligated to pay for extermination. Often, there are home products you can buy cheaply to take care of the problem yourself if your landlord refuses to pay for professional service. Say you'll take care of it yourself if they offer to pay for the products.

If they are in a bed, enclose the mattresses in plastic bags and wash the sheets. If they are in other furniture, shampoo several times in all cracks or throw away. If it is a furnished house, yes- landlord should pay to exterminate, otherwise no, they moved in with you.
