Legal Aid often provides free legal services to individuals involved in divorce/custody matters when that individual is the victim of domestic abuse. A law school may offer a clinic for seniors. Generally, legal advice is not free. "Pro bono" means "for good." Attorneys may choose to work for charities or moral/ethical causes that serve the greater good.

Free legal help is available in most states, but is contingent on your income level, usually you will have to be within 125% of the local poverty level. These services are donated by reputable legal profesionals. An internet search will easily bring up services in your area.

You need to see if you qualify first. It is mainly for low income individuals. Also only certain cases are taken, like social interest, criminal, injury, or eviction. You should check with your local office to find out more information.

Most free legal help is provided by attorney straight out of law school, and thus they are less experienced than those you hire. A few may be retired, and thus experienced.
