You can get free help from the Legal Aid Society, which is usually funded by the State Bar association. First, you need to go to a lawyer to get a referral. When you establish that you cannot pay, he can then refer you to Legal Aid.

The law library at the university answers to a lot of legal questions. They can help you find resources in your community that can represent you at no cost.

Defaults are serious, and need to be worked out right away. What happens is that once the loan goes into default, two things can happen: The bank will sue you for non payment, and order a judge to garnish your wages and (if the loan is on a mortgage, car or boat)have your items repossessed.

Search online your state's name and the words "bar association". Then search the state's site for pro bono (free) legal help. Also call lawyers and ask for a free consultaion.

Yes, it is possible. Most large cities have a non-profit legal aid office for the poor and under-served. However, each office may only specialize in certain types of loans.
