They should be made from acid free material, have good closure a good way to go is to get archival boxes. These are made photos, collectables, and antiques. Many come with polypropylene sleeves which give added protection. Also make sure it says lignin free, which helps stop discoloration and degradation.

I prefer the hard plastic or metal ones, they are very good at keeping any unwanted things out such as water, bugs or small children. I've used the cardboard ones in the past but if anything gets spilled on them they turn to mush. Plastic is good if you ever have a pipe leak or something.
