What legal info can people get from your license plate?

Answer by  tamarawilhite (17883)

License plates are linked to the legal owner of the car. This will provide the name of the owner, the address where the vehicle is registered, and make and model of the car.

Legally, the information is protected. To allow the public access to information association with a car registration violates privacy laws. Law enforcement of course has access to this information, and with good reason. While there is some abuse of the system, it would be illegal for someone to obtain information for personal use.

Your license plate contains no info other than to whom the car is registered. This can only be obtained by someone with the legal right to access that information.
