Look for plastic that is labeled for just that purpose. It will be labeled as plastic "carpet runner" or "rug runner".

There's not really a product to cover the whole floor; as it defeats the purpose of having carpet. For traffic areas, there are runners that are 3ft wide and have small nubs that go into the pile to keep it from shifting. If you're considering covering everything, you should pull out the carpet and get vinyl.
