Berber carpet with a slight pattern will resist damage from high traffic and hide spills. Don't choose a very light color, nor a very dark color. Both very light and very dark carpets show stains more readily. Berber carpets are almost indestructible, and easily cleaned.

Get a stain master high grade loose woven carpet preferably in a dark color. Remember you get what you pay for. The carpet store can help with this.

You should buy a carpet which can be cleaned in the house regularly and the carpet should be light weight as you have small children.

If you are having children in your house then I would make sure that I would buy a darker carpet.
