VRE stands for Vancomycin resistant enterococci, and it is not a virus; VRE are bacteria. Enterococci are a form of bacteria found in 95% of healthy people. The problem arises when enterococci bacteria become resistant to the antibiotic Vancomycin, as some bacteria can only be eradicated with certain antibiotics.

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are enterococci, which is a type of bacteria that have developed resistance to several antibiotics, vancomycin in particular. Enterococci bacteria are normally present in our intestines and on the skin, rarely causing problems. When they cause infection, however, that's a problem because of their resistance to antibiotics.

VRE is an abbreviation for Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci. Vancomycin is a strong antibiotic and this type of bacteria (not virus) is resistant to this antibiotic's effectiveness. This means it can be difficult to treat.
