The record was a Utah youth who texted a 160 characters message in 42. 22 seconds. This was done by Ben Cook of Provo Utah in a competition in Denver.

The previous record was 182000 messages but apparently someone has topped that with 217000 messages. They had an unlimited message plan but the system was set for 100000 messages and this caused an overage charge of something around $26000. That's a lot time spent sending messages.

The world record for text messages in one month is 35,000 including both sending and received or about 1200 messages a day. Better have an unlimited plan.

Not sure if it still holds, but there was a 28 yr old woman from Singapore that smashed the world record by texting 26 words in less than 44 seconds.
