While this condition can be helped by feeding some yogurt, or adjusting feed, it is not a good sign. Diarrhea can also be caused by illness, parasites such as worms, toxicity, etc. If this persists more than a few days, please see a vet- among other dangers this can cause dehydration which is life-threatening in pups.

Pumpkin has long been used to treat upset stomach in puppies. Pumpkin increases digestion, meaning less nutrients are coming back out, and it provides fiber to firm the stool.

A really effective and natural treatment for loose bowels in a puppy or a dog is to add some pureed pumpkin to their food. About one teaspoon per pound should be enough, but more would not be harmful. Make sure you use pureed pumpkin, not the pre-spiced pumpkin pie filling.

Depending on what is wrong, it may be the pup needs worming, treatment for protozoan infection, a bland diet, or some plain canned pumpkin to firm up stool.

Make up a mixture of cooked ground beef and cooked rice. Combine the two and serve it to the puppy warm, not hot. Be sure to supple plenty of water as well. Do not permit any other food for the puppy. If this does not help after 24 hours, call your veterinarian.

When my dog has an upset stomach, I usually try to give it less of the food then it normally eats and more water than usual. I also use plain boiled white rice to try to keep the bowels solid and make sure that the dog's stomach gets less upset. Rice is a good medication for this.
