Brush your cat regularly, then no hairballs will appear. If the cat goes outdoors, he will eat some grass and will manage the hairballs himself. If the cat lives indoors, you have to give him special dry food for hairball control.

If your cat is affected by hairball often, you may want to switch to a cat food specific for hairball with extra fibers. There are also products you can buy such as Laxatone from pet stores that you can give to your cats.

Brushing your cat is one way to help keep down hairballs. There is a mitt that works as a brush. You put it over your hand and simply pet your cat. It removes the hair, and is a pleasant experience for both you and the cat.

Hairballs occur when the cat grooms itself and hair is swallowed. It usually passes naturally but you can give hairball treatments (usually flavored petroleum jelly).

I give my cats a pea sized dab of plain petroleum jelly. This is the main ingredient in commercial hair ball remedies, but PJ is far less expensive and just as effective. Some cats like PJ and will lick it from your fingers but if yours won't, it can be smeared on a paw and kitty will clean it off.

Pet stores sell a variety of hairball remedies from food that helps to small treats. If the hairballs are very bad a vet visit may be in order for advice.
