Hairballs can occur when animals are in need of further grooming. try keeping the coat shorter and daily brushing. If you notice excessive licking,see veterinarian-either behavioral/medical issue

Cats get hairballs from cleaning themselves by licking themselves all the time. Dogs do not do this, so it is not normal for them to have hairballs.

My dog has hair balls all the time, he is a long haired dox, he loves to groom our cat, its totally normal. Our vet said he is very healthy.
