Question by  xx (24)

What is the stinkiest cheese?

I know there's lots of different kinds of stinky cheese, but which one wins as the most stinky?

Answer by  dmstgirl (19)

Limburger cheese is the stinkiest cheese around. this cheese smells worse than it tastes and those who try it either love it or hate it. At first it is a bit like feta cheese but as it ages it gets soft and spreadable. It is stinky but many people like it even though it has a bitter taste.

I love the smell of cheese, especially when it offends other people! Most might say that a blue cheese has the most powerful aroma, however I had a camembert recently that I had out of the fridge for 4 days and it smelled more powerful than anything. Needs to be good quality camembert though!

Limburger cheese wins the prize as the cheese that is perceived, by a overwhelming number of people, that smells the worst.

The cheese that is considered to be most stinky is definitely limburger. However, I have had a bad experience with "Brie cheese" recently.

Limburger = stinkiest... Do not joke. Have you any idea about artisan cheeses like Olomoucký tvarůžek (aka Quargel) or Slovenian Mohant... The first one smells like a dead soldier's socks. The second one tastes and smells like someone ate quargel than threw up...

Limburger cheese, which originated in Germany, has the reputation of being the smelliest cheese. It is fermented with the same bacterium that causes our body odor and has the reputation of having the odor of dirty feet.

Limburg is a region in Belgium not Germany, and it is the birthplace of Limburger cheese. They do make Limburger cheeses in Germany, but they did not originate there.  add a comment
