What is the required lighting for a 24 inch deep aquarium?

The depth is not so important as the wattage per gallon. If you have just fish and live rock, 1/2 watt per gallon is fine. 1 watt per gallon is required if you have clams, anenomies, fans, and the like. So if you have a 100 gallon tank, you'll need either 50 or 100 watts of power.

That is a very deep aquarium but your best option will be a 4 bulb T5 fixture or a Metal halide fixture. Depending on whether you like the shimmer of Metal Halides or the 50/50 range of T5 lighting, you really cant go wrong.

For fresh and salt water fish-only tanks, use two watts per gallon. For freshwater planted tanks, use five watts. If you have a reef tank, use four to eight watts.

You will probably be ok with a 75 watt incandesant bulb. The lighting is really more dependant on the species of fish and marine creatures you have than on the depth of the aquarium.

Metal halide lighting is recommended for any aquarium more than 20 inches deep and a 250-watt bulb is recommended for tanks between 22 and 28 inches in depth.

At the pet store should be different types of lights, depending on the type of fish and the amount of light you would like to have would vary of how bright the light would need to be.
