The overwhelming majority of baldness is caused by genetics. Thus, there is a direct relationship. Keep in mind that genetics is very complicated, and it's not so simple as if your father is bald, you will be, as well.

Unless it is the result of disease, trauma or medical treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy, baldness is almost always related to genetics. Men, as well as some women, inherit a gene that causes progressive hair thinning over time. About 25% of men show some hair loss by age 30 and two-thirds of all men are bald or balding by age 60.

Baldness is a genetic condition passed down from the mother. If your mother's father was bald, you have a good likelihood of being bald.

If the men in your family tend to not have a lot of hair then you will probably not have a lot of hair when you're that age. If your family tends to start balding earlier you will probably start balding around that same age. This is not always true but it's usually the case.

Usually if your parents or grandparents are balding or have receding hair lines, chances are you will also go bald or have a receding hair line.
