Embroidery hoops are used mostly for stretching the fabric out so it doesn't bunch up and catch. They also provide a nice, flat surface that you can hold as you work, and can be used as frames for hanging finished work as well.

The hoops come in a variety of sizes for the many projects that crafters do. There are also wooden, metal, and plastic embroidery hoops available.

A hoop keep the top, bottom and inter layer flat and contained. Sewing wihtout invites teh fabric to be uneven and hard to keep a pattern.
