A hanging bag usually takes up a lot less space and you can hang all your clothes up without having to unpack them and put in a drawer.

I always thought that it had to do with keeping your clothes clean on a trip. It is usually used for nice clothes and they need to stay clean, since a lot of them have to be dry cleaned. That always made sense to me and I never thought of any other reason.
