With your index finger (1) on the first valve, middle finger (2) on the second, and ring finger (3) on the last, the sequence from middle C is: open, 1 and 3, 1 and 2, 1, open, 1 and 2, 2, and open. Tighten the lips as you go up.

Once trumpet, cornet, or flugelhorn players can sound every note up and down a scale, playing songs are not much more difficult.
