The Hawaiian ukulele was based on the machete which was introduced by Portuguese immigrants. It was popular in the 1920s, in the post war era, and has had a recent resurgence in popularity. Arthur Godfrey played the ukulele, and Tiny Tim famously played Tiptoe Thru the Tulips on the uke. George Harrison also played the ukulele.
