There are a number of explanations. One is that "lick," which means speed (he was traveling at a fast lick), is combined with "hickety," a Scottish euphemism for "hell," hence, "lickety. " "Split" was added for emphasis. The term has links to the Scottish, but is wholly American in its origin.

It first appeared in 1848 as 'lickoty split'. "Lickoty" is believed to have Scottish origins, from lick, meaning speed. The "split" part is thought to have been added in America.
