What is the origin of the Christmas Creche?

In 1223, Francis of Assissi celebrated Christmas in the town of Grecio. Realizing the church was too small too hold the crowd, Francis decided to hold Midnight Mass outdoors. To better help the laity understand his message, he recreated the manger scene and preached in front of it. Records show that it had a profound effect on those in attendance.

According to the Bible, Joseph and his pregnant wife Mary fled their home to the town of Bethlehem. They had no place to stay, so they were sleeping in a stable when Jesus was born.
