What is the new craze that has to do with Santa's elf?

There are two theories. The one has to do with the idea that Santa has lots of help in order to pull off his Christmas Eve miracle. Thus, this highlights the little guy's importance in the grand scheme of things. The other thought is that, every other nuance of Christmas has been played out already, and writers needed new material.
