They signify what's in and out. For serving, you have to serve in the service box marked by the lines.

The lines on the tennis court indicate boundaries for where the ball can land on a shot and where one can stand when serving. The server must stand behind the back baseline to serve and must hit the ball into the box diagonally across the court. A normal shot hit outside of the boundaries results in a lost point.

They show what's in an what's out. The alleys down the 2 sides show that the court is wider for doubles. The lnes that create the 2 small boxes on either side are where yo have to hit the ball for a server.

Every ball outside the lines is out what means a points for second player. The newest thing is that if you are not sure were the ball hit a court, you can check recorder.
