BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and creatinine tests measure kidney function. However, dehydration makes BUN go up faster than creatinine, so the BUN/creatinine ratio is used to evaluate the reliability of the BUN measurement. BUN and creatinine both go up if you have kidney problems (low BUN/creatinine ratio).

BUN is blood Urea Nitrogen. Both BUN and Creatinine are markers of renal (kidney) function and are not directly related to the liver.

Well the test is checking your kidney function. It can determine pre-renal failure, dehydration, kidney disease and how your liver is functioning.

BUN and creatinie are excreted by the kidneys and accumulate in the blood stream if the kidneys are failing. Live failure causes both to increase and have a high ratio.
